MINUTES
-----------------
DASC Steering Committee Meeting
3 September 1999
At FDL, Lyon, France
------------------------------------
Notes from the Chair:
-------------------------------------
We are coming to the close of another year of robust activity in the
DASC. With the completion of IEEE approval for VHDL-AMS, DPC, and VHDL
Synthesis Interoperability standards we have traveled a long way down the
path that we set out on to provide a complete set of specifications for
standards based design, at least for current and near future technologies.
Additional steps on this path are being taken as we go forward with the
ballot for the next version of VITAL (invitations have just been sent out),
closure on ballot for SDF and upcoming ballots for Verilog, Verilog
synthesis and Verilog-analog.
With the completion of VHDL-AMS standardization we now have a peaceful
transition of leadership from the excellent stewardship of Alain Vachoux
(many thanks and congratulations to Alain) to the new chair Tom Kazmierski.
Tom Kazmierski. For those who do not know Tom, his coordinates are:

--- Department of Electronics and Computer Science,
--- University of Southampton, Southampton, Hampshire, SO17 1BJ,
--- UNITED KINGDOM
--- tjk@ecs.soton.ac.uk tel. +44 1703 593520 fax. +44 1703 592901
--- http://www.syssim.ecs.soton.ac.uk/

We would all like to welcome him and wish him good fortune. I am especially
hopeful that we will see a renewed effort to coordinate the work of VHDL-AMS
with the work going on in the Verilog world so that we can have as much
commonality as makes sense. I think that Tom is in a good position to take
this on..
I would also like to remember the visionary work of Jean-Michel Berge
who started this work on VHDL-AMS and saw it through some difficult times.
He is now off working in different fields but his impact here is happily
much felt.

With the new year approaching we will be holding elections for some of
the DASC leadership positions and will also be asking people to join the
DASC for the year 2000. Call for nominations will be coming shortly from
John Hillawi who is managing the election process. The positions which will
come open are:

Position Current Holder
DASC Chair Victor Berman
P1499 OMF Gabe Moretti
P1510 CHDStd Steve Grout
P1364.1 Verilog Synth RTL J. Bhasker

So watch for the call for nominations if you are interested in
participating.

Membership (dues payers) in the DASC has remained steady but at a low rate.
This is in spite of heavy activity and much larger membership in the working
groups. While I would like more people to become members of the DASC this is
not a critical need as long as the WGs remain strong. After all, the real
work of the DASC is in the WGs. By keeping expenses down we have managed to
keep in the black financially despite the skimpy membership. Since our
balance sheet is strong and potential future very healthy perhaps we should
consider an IPO to fund future expansion.

Speaking of FUTURE PLANS, it seems that these must include work in the area
of systems design. The SLDL ( http://www.inmet.com/SLDL/ ) group has been
working on this issue and now a group from the OVI TCC has begun some work
as well. We at DASC should become familiar with the issues involved and
begin making plans to support standards in this area when appropriate. In
the past we have worked closely with VI and OVI as supporters and feeders of
standards initiatives. These groups are considering structural changes
including the possibility of merging. We should be proactive in working
closely with them in supporting the best interests of industry standards. I
would like to continue are close relationship with these bodies and
strengthen the links to improve the planning and execution phases of
standardization. This with the goal of making the process more efficient and
more in tune with the needs of the DA industry both vendors and users.

Regards,
Victor Berman
DASC Chair

============================================================

New standards approved by IEEE since last meeting:
-------------
1076.1 AMS
1481 Delay & Power Calculation System

PARs in ballot
--------------
1076.6 is going through another re-circulation. Note: completed approval
after the meeting.
1497 SDF In Ballot

Active PARs
-----------
SID PAR is active
1076, 1076a to be combined
1076.4 almost ready to go to ballot
1364 ready to go to ballot soon
1164 is due for reaffirmation shortly. It has not been done, but should be.

AR: Victor to take care of getting the call for ballot out

1076.1
------
Editing the final version of the LRM for 1076.1. Two documents were
provided along with a delta document then an integrated document for
documentation - not for the ballot itself. Both documents were provided to
the IEEE and they elected to publish an integrated document with change bars
for changes to the definitions. This was an IEEE decision. At this time
you can tell that a whole paragraph is changed with exact changes.
Strikeout for old and highlight for additions was the style of the document.
But this is not how the IEEE plans to publish. They translated Word to
Frame and the index source was not regenerated properly. 1076.1 has
insisted that this is redone, but the IEEE has elected not to do this.
There is an annex in the lrm which describes the changes from 1987 and this
annex was not updated and needs to be done but cannot otherwise it would
have to be rebooted. But if this change was done, then all changes could be
highlighted in this annex.

We have no dates when the document will be available and the PDF file needs
to be reviewed once it is returned. This will take about 1-2 months to
review it.

The working group is still working on ambiguities and other items like
gathering requirements on the use of the language. The control system
community may show interest in the use of the language, which will yield a
new set of requirements, such as a description of real-time systems in
VHLD-AMS.

DASC Active Groups/Elections
----------------------------
Many positions are up for ballot at the beginning of the year. Some
positions are in suspense while we complete the election. [SEE ATTACHEMENT]

Some groups have not been active. Should we prune the groups, which are not
active and do not report to the DASC? Chair would like to migrate some of
the groups, which appear, not doing any work to in active.

We need to do a call for nominations for these groups. John Hillawi will
see the groups from the list which need to be called. Need to see if the
current chairs want to continue and/or if there are others that would like
to run for the chair positions.

Chair positions and voting for them can only be DASC members. We should be
able to announce the new chairs. The new AMS chair is Tom Kazmierski. He
is chair from 1/00 to 1/2002. We should recommend to the 1149.4
mixed-signal test a liaison.

NEW PARs
--------
Standard for Object-Oriented extensions to standard VHDL
--------------------------------------------------------
There were some changes to the PAR form to simplify the scope and purpose.
Peter to get back to the group to inform them of their changes.

VHDL/Verilog Interoperability PAR
----------------------------------
We should examine the formation of a group to review the need to address
interoperability issues between 1076 and 1364. This discussion remains
open.
