POSITION STATEMENT OF VICTOR BERMAN
Dear DASC Members:
It has been my privilege to serve you as DASC chair for the past two
terms. I would like to thank you for this honor and ask for your support in my
third and final term before retiring.
During my tenure as chair I have kept the organization functioning
smoothly and productively with a minimum of administrative overhead for the
members
in dealing with the IEEE bureaucracy. I have lowered dues from $150 to $50
per year while improving the flow of information and services and have
overseen the start and completion of many important standards such as VHDL-AMS
and
Verilog.
If you chose me to represent you in a final term I plan to move forward
with a coordinated effort to develop standards for system level design and
strengthen our relations with VI and OVI to make this a reality. I am also in
the midst
of improving our web site at http://dasc.org to provide additional timely
information about new directions in the industry.
I would very much like to serve out my final term and ask for your
support.
Sincerely,
Victor Berman
DASC Chair
POSITION STATEMENT OF PAUL MENCHINI
The DASC has, of late, been moribund. While certain Working Groups
have been forging ahead and making excellent progress, and several
important standards have been finished, I feel that more could be
done, both for them, for the less active groups, and for the
membership. In addition to reinstating our thrice-yearly US meetings,
we need to recommit to at least one annual meeting in both the eastern
Pacific region and in Europe. Such meetings will keep the membership
informed and serve to recruit additional members. Regular reports
from all WG Chairs must once again be part of the DASC.
Additionally, the DASC is in danger of becoming irrelevant. Other
venues for standardization are springing up. While these defacto
groups cannot create standards with the prestige of an IEEE standard,
there is ample evidence that they will pursue their goals
independently of the DASC if we do not foster cooperation with them.
Such cooperation is mutually beneficial. The industry groups are an
excellent source of ideas and candidate standards, and the DASC has
real benefit to them by ensuring that their standards have the quality
and acceptance of an IEEE standard. It is imperative that we have
regular exchanges of ideas and plans with them. We must invite formal
cross-representation and informational exchanges, and we must, upon
occasion, meet in common venues.
Finally, we must do more with electronic venues. While there is no
substitute for regular face-to-face meetings, it has been amply
demonstrated that we simply cannot conduct all DASC business in this
manner. We need to develop and maintain our web pages and explore
more interactive ways of electronically exchanging information.
I look forward to serving you, implementing these proposals, and
soliciting and implementing additional ways to increase the strength
and viability of the DASC. I welcome your vote.
