RE: Accellera and DASC

Evan,

I'm sure Peter will provide detailed information and/or correct me if I have gotten any of the information below wrong or it is incomplete.

I'd like to know what questions/issues motivated this email?

To my knowledge, Accellera has never provided funding to DASC. DASC or WGs of DASC have requested assistance from Accellera in covering certain costs of standards development -- specifically the costs of technical editing of LRMs. For example, Accellera has provided funding for the VHPI LRM editing work for VHDL 1076. But, those funds have never been provided directly to DASC.

Funding of standards development work is extremely important. It would be impossible to get any significant standard (where significant standard is something more than a package or two written entirely in VHDL -- that is a size/complexity measurement and not value of the standard assessment) without funding.

Must the funding come from Accellera? No. But, it must come from somewhere that provides the facilities for collection of donations, disbursement of funds and some checks that the work contracting for was performed.

As for the question of membership, I believe the net is cast too wide. What is relevant is whether or not there are conflicts of interests between governing boards of the two organizations. The potential for conflict of interest would only exist at the intersection of Accellera board members and DASC-SC members.

The DASC-SC membership can be found at: http://www.dasc.org/steering-committee.html.

Accellera membership is corporation/organization based. It's membership list is published at: http://www.accellera.org/member.html. Only corporate members are eligible for Accellera board membership.

A relatively quick summary of the intersection of DASC-SC members and their affiliations:

Stephen Bailey (DASC Secretary, 1076 WG Chair), Mentor Graphics
Victor Berman (DASC Vice Chair), Cadence
Oz Levia (DASC Treasurer), Synopsys
Michael McNamara (1364 WG Chair), Verisity
Yaron Kashai (1647 WG Chair), Verisity
Wolfgang Roethig (1603 WG Chair), NEC

I don't think the SC membership list is up-to-date as of the last DASC-SC meeting. Therefore, the above list may be missing a few WG chairs that may be affiliated with Accellera members.
